We all know how important are quality backlinks to get a site rank high on the google search results. in fact backlinks were the early thing that made google so different from other search engines back at the day.
In recent tweet conversation, google Gary Illyes posted a DYK (did you know) tweet that says “if you can’t figure out how to rank for a competitive query, sometimes the answer will be to optimise for images and/or video?”:
Then someone asked him if its possible to rank a medium competitive keyword without any links at all , to that Gary answered a simple “yes”
What do he mean by that?
I guess everything is “possible” , if CNN or Fox news don’t have links they can still rank a keyword but does unknown website with no authority at all can rank a competitive keyword with zero backlinks? seems unlikely.

I have yet to really figure out the backlink strategy that works for me, however, this is good news and gives everyone a chance to rank for something.
